Our Founder’s Message

A Dream That Became a Reality

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose always wanted to see our Tiranga rise over the Red Fort. In August 1947, his dream finally became a reality. A day after we got our freedom, Jawaharlal Nehru stood at the Red Fort and raised our Tiranga. Since then, every Independence Day, the Prime Minister does the same. It is not just a ritual, but a reminder of the struggle and the price we paid for freedom.

Before the Tiranga Belonged to the People

For centuries, flags never belonged to the people. They were marks of kings, emperors and rulers. The Mauryas had theirs, the Mughals had theirs, and the British flew the Union Jack. It was always about power. But a nation is not just rulers and borders. A nation is its people, their faith in each other, and the sacrifices they are ready to make. That is when a flag becomes ours.

A Lesson I Learnt Far From Home

I always liked the Tiranga. But in 1990, while studying in the US, I saw how Americans treated their flag. They displayed it everywhere, with pride. I came back wanting the same for India. To my surprise, I found that I couldn’t. The law allowed us to hoist the flag only on special days. It didn’t feel right. As India is a democratic country, every Indian should have the right to raise the flag.

Turning Belief into Action

I decided to fight for my country. With the words of Gandhi and Sarojini Naidu in mind, and the help of senior lawyers, I went to court. On 23rd January 2004, the Supreme Court ruled that every Indian has the right to raise the Tiranga. For the first time in history, the flag truly became ours.

A Daily Reminder of Duty

Since that victory in the Supreme Court, I raise our Tiranga every day at my home and my workplace. Every morning when I pin the Tiranga on my jacket, it reminds me of my duty towards this country. The Tiranga unites us in joy and pride. I saw it when India won the Cricket World Cup in 2011, and people everywhere waved the flag with tears and smiles.

Raising the Tiranga Across the Nation

Rahul Gandhi once suggested I install monumental flags across the country. That idea gave birth to many projects. Today, the Flag Foundation of India has installed more than 190 monumental flags, including the 207-foot flag in New Delhi. These flags stand tall as a symbol of pride for all Indians.

The Colours That Guide Us

The three colours speak to me deeply. Saffron is sacrifice and service. White is truth and honesty. Green is growth and harmony. The Ashok Chakra is movement and progress.

The Tiranga: My Pride, My Inspiration

The Tiranga is more than cloth. It is our pride, our courage, and our shared hope for the future.
